The Opportunity – Occupational Health Specialist:

 

Reporting to SaskTel’s Human Resources Director, this unique and exciting opportunity is part of a small dynamic team providing a wide range of occupational health services to SaskTel employees. The Occupational Health Specialist requires knowledge, skills and experience directly related to the health sector to assist the Health Services team in delivering and supporting health and wellness programs for SaskTel’s workforce. Preference will be given to applicants in the nursing field and/or experienced in the areas of disability management, fitness to work assessments, hazardous exposure tracking, audiology, accommodation support, and health education.  In addition, the Occupational Health Specialist will provide management with support in the duty to accommodate and attendance management related to sick leave.   Periodic travel is required throughout the province.

 

Accountabilities of the Role:

  1. Uses a case management approach to facilitate a successful, early, and safe return to work, based on the employee’s functional capacities and in consultation with the employee, the health care providers, line management, Unifor, and 3rd party benefit providers such as Workers Compensation Board, Saskatchewan Government Insurance, and Public Employees Benefits Administration.
  2. Supports line management in fulfilling their duty to accommodate through communication of work restrictions and/or employee needs, education, assisting and seeking solution for appropriate accommodation.
  3. Reviews medical information supplied by health care providers to adjudicate the appropriateness of time loss, treatment plan, restrictions and return to work timeline, based on nature of illness. Adjudication and follow up with employee and/or care provider determines eligibility for sick leave benefits, compliance with the treatment plan, and appropriate return to work plan.
  4. Conducts comprehensive fitness to work medical assessments to determine the candidate’s functional capacity as it relates to the physical demands of the position. Maintains established health surveillance programs (audiometric, asbestos and pesticide exposure) providing evidence-based education to employees to maximize their occupational health.
  5. Provides education, direction and expertise to managers and Human Resources/Industrial Relations, regarding attendance awareness and sick leave management.
  6. Devises evidence-based health strategies by analyzing worker and global illness/injury trends. Accordingly, researches, develops and delivers health education programs designed to improve employee health and productivity within the corporation.
  7. Promotes the principles of ergonomics by identifying higher risk job demands, advocating proper body mechanics and optimal workspace design to minimize work-related illness/injury.
  8. Develops and maintains effective working relationships with health professionals, professional associations, community resources and external stakeholder groups.
  9. Promotes community health strategies or initiatives.
  10. Concisely and completely documents employee medical information and ensures an accurate and confidential medical record keeping system in accordance with current privacy legislation.

 

The Successful Candidate Will Possess:

  1. A current member of the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association or professional association related to health, rehab and disability management.
  2. Extensive experience in primary health care and/or disability management.
  3. Demonstrated initiative and dedication to the principles of a healthy and safe workplace and environment.
  4. Current CPR certificate.
  5. Experience in preparing and delivering effective presentations.
