JOB SUMMARY
Provides advanced Level III on-demand technical support to internal and external customers on core network elements, access elements, data networks and wireless elements.  Researches, tests, analyses, consults, and educates internal and external customers on hardware, software, and firmware for new elements and systems as well as resolution of issues with existing elements and systems.   Ensures service objectives and effective implementation, operational and maintenance procedures are
developed and maintained. Provides lead vendor technical interface for contracts, technology implementation, and incident resolution.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
(Not all inclusive or applicable to all assignments)

1. Provides on demand 24/7 level III technical support to isolate, analyze, resolve, and restore customer premise and network: GIS, DC power, voice, data, wireless, video, IP and IT, integrated and stand alone hardware, firmware, and software systems.  Replicates customer troubles as required to quickly develop solutions.  Performs these tasks while under pressure from impacted clients and customers.
2. Provides technical assistance with development and/or delivery of seminars, workshops, on site training, formal training, and direct consultation.
3. Develops and maintains MOPs (Method of Procedures) operational bulletins, standards and administrative procedures/practices.
4. Performs and assists with security and operational reviews and audits.
5. Provides technical expertise to SaskTel International, vendor user groups and other customer groups as required.
6. Commissions and maintains Captive network hardware, firmware, software and management systems in test lab for evaluation, trouble shooting and training requirements.
7. Conducts and evaluates interoperability testing to ensure compatibility with existing elements and network.
8. Coordinates and assists in implementation or installation in conjunction with internal and external Department teams.
9. Defines SaskTel s maintenance plans and establishing standard practice for maintenance cycles, sparing levels balancing cost vs. risk.
10. Evaluates, substantiates, recommends and directs the implementation of hardware/firmware/software and test equipment into SaskTel's operational environment.
11. Is responsible, on behalf of SaskTel, for direct communication to vendors and partners on resolution of technical issues.  Works with these same teams to evaluate and introduce new network elements.
12. Plans, directs, and performs initial, unique, high risk, and complex implementation of hardware, firmware, and software within the operational environment.
13. Provides consultation to internal and external departments.
14. Communicates and creates working agreements with internal groups and external companies.

 

QUALIFICATIONS
1. Degree in Science majoring in Computer Science, Electronic Systems Engineering or Electrical Engineering specializing in electronics or communication OR 2 year Technical Diploma in Data Processing / Programming or Computer Technology or Electronic Engineering Technology or Electrical Engineering Technology.
2. Thorough knowledge, typically gained with six years experience in a combination of the following roles of which 2 years of specialization is within the specified technical environment:
a) Design, operation or maintenance in software controlled Digital switch and carrier IP voice technologies.
b) Design, operation or maintenance of core transport/multiplex systems and IP routing/switching and access technologies.
c) Design, operation or maintenance of Wireless carrier, mobility and fixed wireless systems.
d) Design, operation or maintenance of DC power plants and grounding procedures.
e) Program design, coding, testing, documentation, implementation, configuration, and support for computer-based systems.
f) Design, operation or maintenance of Analog/Digital Networks and Access Facilities.
g) Network performance metrics analysis of wireless carriers.
h)  Design of GIS toolsets and Outside Plant Facilities Record Management
3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to deal effectively with others.
4. Working knowledge of personal computers and scripting applications commonly used to automate processes.
5. Working knowledge of corporate practices and procedures.
6. Ability to lead, direct, coach and train others.
7. Valid Driver s Licence.
8. Demonstrated initiative.
9. Ability to plan and organize in a self-directed environment.
10. Ability to resolve complex problems independently.
